‘Story of your life’ revolves around the life of Dr. Louise Banks, a linguist working for the military whose job is to communicate with the aliens that made contact with the humans. She narrates her experience of learning the alien language and understanding their world view which is interspersed with the remembrances of her daughter’s life. “Reading is nothing; comprehension is everything”. Sarah Richards I read this short story while away at a conference for technical writers. The quote above came from a presentation about transforming the Government Digital Service, but the issues of communication (context and audience) that are at the heart of this story are key to technical writing and had echoes in many of the presentations. Perhaps it is no coincidence that Ted Chiang is also a technical writer. Same Old, Same Old? No Aliens arr..more

Speechless. This short is so well done, written and transmits that much.. it's sci-Fi but it's not just sci-Fi, it's a story that goes directly to your heart and makes you wonder, what would I do if I was her? I'm sure I'm not strong enough to accept some things and I can't tell anything here since every word I'd said would be a huge spoiler but this is a highly recommend read for science fiction's lovers and it has a strong, smart heroine whose behavior is admirable. Unlike the disappointing film 'Arrival', this short story is freshly thought-provoking. There are moments in the movie that were neat, but far too little importance was placed on the mesmerizing philosophy that is embodied in language.
Aliens have a completely different way of experiencing our universe than we do, but it is just as valid and perhaps less restraining. For us, action is about creating a chronology of events guided by our free will. Whereas they use action as a way to actualize even..more

Man atrodo p. Weir atsirado konkurencija. Iki tol man jis buvo 'tiksliausias' fantastikos autorius.

Story of Your Life is narrated by linguist Dr Louise Banks the day her daughter is conceived. Addressed to her daughter, the story alternates between recounting the past: the coming of the aliens and the deciphering of their language; and remembering the future: what will happen to her unborn daughter as she grows up, and the daughter's untimely death. The military hires Dr Banks to communicate..more

This short story came highly recommended when I asked for science-fiction recommendations for someone who didn't previously have the best experience with books in the genre. It started very slow and boring but I pushed through (it's a short story, so might as well, right?) It then got a bit better in the middle, but went downhill again towards the end. I kind of hoped for an actual climax to the story. Plot twist: it was utterly absent. I only enjoyed the past timeline narrative; the a..more

I saw the movie couple of months ago and didn't like it that much (or at least I couldn't understand the hype), but to be honest I didn't understand the meaning of heptapods' language and its difference to ours. The original story is much clearer about it and I think I know what the author meant at last. I guess the physics explanation helped a lot, I have no idea why they omitted it in the movie. Anyway, the story is great and reading about a relationship between language and human perception o..more
I frequently say that sci-fi is a setting not a genre and this story is a wonderful reminder that I'm wrong: it is (or can be!) both.
This is a short story of a first contact with minds that are clearly alien and it is about people trying to figure out how to communicate. It is very good! It delves into interesting linguistic detail (how do you start learning a completely alien language?), sprinkles in a bit of physics (enough to be intriguing and plausible without drowning in it) and philosophy. This is the short story that the movie Arrival was based on. Although you know it is loosely the same story when reading the short, after watching the movie, they are quite different. In the book there is quite a blur between what is past, present and future. And everything seems to have a double meaning. There is quite a bit left to thought, which I didn't quite get from the movie. I'm starting to pick up quite a strong thread off linguistics and sci..more ![]()

Wow. I didn't know that hard science fiction could be so beautiful. The way the author wove the mother-daughter memories into the story of alien first contact was inspired. I'll admit the physics and linguistic concepts were a bit of a challenge to my non-technical brain, but they were interesting and complimentary to the story.
I'm a fan of the movie Arrival, but it was more to do with the music and the visuals and less so the story. The movie didn't capture one-tenth of the emotion that the sto..more

I read this for a challenge I have seen and liked Arrival and was curious about the short story it was based on, my knowledge of linguistics is below par so I was as lost as in the movie, jajaja. This is different because Hollywood decided to go the Hollywood way, but I would recommended for fans of smart sci-fi. #51. An award-winning short story or short story collection

Книга, на основі якої зробили кіно Arrival.

The best first contact story ever written.Original and full of fascinating ideas.Stories like this one prove that science fiction is literature of very greatest kind.Maintream critics should stay away. They wouldn't understand it anyway.Everybody knows they are not smart enough.I could also praise Dennis Villenuve's film to high heaven, but the place for that is IMDB.

Arrival has become one of my favourite movies of all times and I was curious to read the source material, of course. It was great, but I'll say that I really like what they changed in the movie.

My mind is blown. This is without a doubt the best sci-fi story I have ever read. This is not another Alien story. In this story, the aliens are just an element used by Chiang to explore deeper theories and create a story that is nothing less than amazing. He weaves a story about the life of the daughter of a linguist and a physicist, relating it to language, physics and the story of the linguist herself. A plethora of physics theories and linguistic theories come into play during the course of..more

Since I was a child and started to read, I have always refused to read science fiction. I may have grudgingly read one or two books. Until 'Story of your life'. Somebody recommended 'Arrival', a film 'about aliens' which I am not very fond of either.
However, Ted Chiang (and movie director Denis Villeneuve) break all stereotypes. In the story, linguist Dr. Banks is 'invited' by the Us Army to establish communication with one of the many alien spaceships hovering over the US (there are many others..more
Far from the aliens sci-fi genre this is more like a philosophical drama about language and how humans perceive time events because of it. This is an awesome story that, like heptapod B, once you read it, it changes the way you see life events forever. That is, if you haven’t already. It’s either sequential or simultaneous (parallel) language and thinking. Mutually exclusive but dependent of each other. I guess there are a few ways to truly understand simultaneous thinking, like practicing a lot..more

P. 30 - 'The physical universe was a language with a perfectly ambiguous grammar. Every physical event was a nutterance that could be parsed in two entirely different ways, one casual and the other teleological, both valid, neither one disqualifiable no matter how much context was available.'

A beautiful, thought provoking short story with a fascinating concept and philosophical undertones. Highly enjoyable.
Гледах 'Arrival' и, логично, реших, че трябва да прочета новелата, по която е филмът.
Стилът не е това, което ми харесва, но темите - да. Език и време.
A fascinating premise arising out of physics theory; with philosophical and linguistic applications. Innovative and unique. A fun and thought provoking read.
So wonderful. A piece of science fiction that feels so much more real and important than much of this genre. Also beautiful and gloriously interesting, as someone who hopes to be a linguist.
